More Jewish Insanity
by Nachum Shifren
When we want to
find normal thinking, we can count on the Gentile nations for their input. Why?
Because they're normal, and act according to the laws of nature and of normal
human relations. The intent here is to illustrate the much belabored issue ("lamdanus",
in Yiddish) mentioned in this week's Torah portion: when the Jewish people are
to enter the Land of Israel, Hashem commands them to wipe out the inhabitants.
If not, they will be "thorns in your sides, pins in your eyes."
What every yeshiva student ever wanted to know is: Does this mitzvah apply to
the "palestinian" Arabs? Now, here is the element of the abnormal, coming from
the very mouths of yeshivah scholars. And so we have to shout out, beseech, and
raise our voice to the heavens in question: After 5 wars against us, wars of
annihilation and total destruction, where every Arab leader screeched in
loathing of the Jews, of their blood, what difference does it make? After
Hizbollah and Islamic Jihad are vanquished, after Al Qaeda and all foreign
terrorists are on their back, we are still saddled with the "painful" question
about over 1 million hostile Arabs- ISRAELI CITIZENS, WHO VOTE, WHO HAVE RIGHTS
AS ISRAELIS, and who speak better Hebrew than you......who hate Jews and the
Jewish state. These are the same "palestinians" who rushed to their rooftops
during the Saddam raining of scud missiles onto Israel, and promptly started to
dance and make merry.
When Hashem gave that order to the Jews, He understood in his infinite wisdom,
that there is no making peace with a hostile population that is in its very
essence antithetical to the Jewish soul and body. Furthermore, after vanquishing
such an enemy, they will forever be contentious and vindictive to the Jewish
people-- better just finish them off, or allow them to leave forever, they were
told.
While this may not go over too well with our Western sentimental ways of
compassion for every cause under the sun, it is surely the "way of life"
(Torah). And on this matter does Rashi (z"l) tell us in commentary: if you wipe
them out, you'll be able to exist in the Land-- if not; you won't be able to
exist in the Land.
When Binyamin Kahane HY"D had the temerity to ask, why in fact, are we bombing
Beirut? We should rather bomb Um El Fahm (a cancerous Arab village in the heart
of Israel!) For this seditious talk, he was sentenced to real jail time for
"incitement to racism".
There's so much our Torah teaches us, so much we need to know. What is good? The
Torah is good. Good, Evil, Compassion, Cruelty- these things we must LEARN from
the source of our very lives, and not what some newspaper columnist decides.
May Hashem have compassion on His people Israel, who are facing physical
destruction, and on us, who are facing the spiritual wasteland, knowing not to
discern between Good, Bad and "normal" relations with our enemies.
